The Sunshine Blogger Award x2

I was nominated for the Sunshine Blogger Award twice in the last couple of days – first by the fantastic Irena @ Books and Hot Tea and then by the lovely Shaz @ Shaz Reads.  Go check out their blogs if you don’t already follow them!  Thanks so much guys!

The Rules

  1. Thank the person who nominated you and link back to their blog.
  2. Answer the 11 questions your nominator has given you.
  3. Nominate 11 other people and give them 11 new questions to answer.
  4. List the rules and display the award

Irena’s questions:

1. What is your favourite period in history (the one you find most interesting)?

I’m going to shock everyone with this answer and say Classical – Hellenistic Greece.  I can’t help it, I’ve been obsessed with Ancient Greece since I was a kid.

But also, I did study Art History in college, and my favorite period was the Italian Baroque which was heavily influenced by the Protestant Reformation and subsequent Counter-Reformation and the Council of Trent, so that’s another period that interests me that I don’t usually talk about.  There – slightly less boring and predictable.

2. If you could be a fictional character for a day, who would you be and why?

This answer changes daily, but right now I’m going to say Inej from Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom.  I’d love to be that stealthy for a day.

3. What is your favourite TV show at the moment?

I’m so bad at TV….. I mainly watch British soaps and reality competition shows (Survivor, ANTM, GBBO, Bachelor/Bachelorette)…… sorry if you were expecting a more highbrow answer.  I just struggle to get invested in dramas because I feel like they usually take themselves too seriously, or are too violent, or…. something.  I don’t know.  I haven’t found a tv drama I’ve loved in a while.  That said, my all time favorite series is probably Black Mirror.  There we go.  Acceptably highbrow answer.

4. What is the best book you’ve read so far in 2017? (Or at least one of the best, I know it can be hard to choose.)

I have read so, so, so many good books this year, I already know my ‘best books of 2017’ post at the end of the year is going to be torturous.  But the two that really stand out to me are two that I actually read very early in the year: East of Eden by John Steinbeck and Pachinko by Min Jin Lee.

5. Do you have a favourite toy, from childhood or now? (Yes, I still buy toys for myself.)

Hmm, not really – though when I was younger I had a very impressive Beanie Baby collection.  I’m not sure where they all got to…..

6. Who are some of your favourite villains?

Voldemort/Tom Riddle from Harry Potter, Cersei Lannister from A Song of Ice and Fire, Big Brother from 1984, Cathy Ames from East of Eden, Edmund from King Lear.

7. What is the favourite place you’ve visited?

I’m cheating – I have two answers.  The first is Bologna, Italy, where I lived for a year, which is pretty much my favorite place on earth.

tumblr_mddxj4ymk31rhzzcjo1_500
View from Chiesa San Luca; Bologna, Italy.

My second answer is Belgium, which fits the question better as it’s somewhere I’ve only visited, rather than lived.

Main square in Brussels – terrible quality as I’m lifting it from my Facebook.

I spent about four days in Brussels and Bruges in December during my year abroad, and it was stupidly pretty in both of those cities.

8. What is your favourite snack?

Tortilla chips and guacamole.  Also those Luna peanut butter chocolate protein bars.

9. If you had to choose, would you rather become a vampire or a werewolf?

Yikes, neither… I guess a vampire, if I had to choose?

10. Pirates or ninjas? 😛

Hmm, I’m not terribly keen on either… at the moment I’ll say ninjas, but I’ve recently started Black Sails at Chelsea’s urging, so if I get really into that maybe my answer will change.  (For anyone who is invested in my potential future enjoyment of Black Sails, have patience.  I watch tv maddeningly slowly.)

11. Share a quote you really like!

If you show someone something you’ve written, you give them a sharpened stake, lie down in your coffin, and say, ‘When you’re ready’.” – David Mitchell, Black Swan Green

Shaz’s questions:

1. What inspired you to start blogging?

It wasn’t that anything inspired me as much as the fact that I was writing book reviews anyway, so I liked the idea of having them all in one place!

2. What is one thing that you wished you knew when you started blogging and why?

People love it when you comment on their posts.  Don’t be scared.  Talk to people.  (I got over this pretty quickly.  I’m pretty good at talking to strangers on the internet.  I’ve been at this for quite a while now.)

3. What are your top five favorite books or series?

Harry Potter, Les Miserables, The Iliad, A Little Life, The Secret History.

4. What is your favorite dessert?

Tiramisu, probably, but at my favorite gelateria in Bologna I always got one scoop of dark chocolate and one scoop of coconut gelato, and I would literally die for that right now.

5. What is the best vacation you have ever been on?

When I graduated college, I treated myself to a three week vacation to visit one of my best friends who lives in Germany, in Braubach.  So when I was there I also got to see Berlin (the coolest city ever), Frankfurt, Cologne, Marburg, and Koblenz, and then we also took a few days and went to Paris – I’d been to the south of France before but this was my first time in Paris, which was just as gorgeous as I expected.  The real standout from that trip was Berlin, though – my friend’s aunt let us use her flat while she was out of town, so we had this swanky flat all to ourselves so we kind of pretended that it was our own flat, I felt very European.  We also had the best Indian food I’ve ever tasted.

6. If you could bring to life a book or movie character for one day, who would you choose? What would you do with them?

I’d bring Sansa Stark to life so we can complain about men and plot to overthrow the patriarchy, and she can teach me how to sew.

7. If you had a million dollars, what would you do with it?

Pay off my student loans, buy somewhere for my parents to retire, and travel.

8. Do you like spending time outdoors?

In the summer, I love it more than anything!  I live in a stunningly beautiful place.  I’m not very sporty, but one thing I do love to do is kayak in the summer.  Or just sit out on my porch with a book.  In the winter, I would pretty much rather die than step outside.

9. What kinds of shoes do you usually wear?

Well, one element of my job involves physical labor, so I have to be practical and wear tennis shoes every day.  In an ideal world, oxfords, I guess.

10. What would your dream home look like?

I’m obsessed with modern architecture and buildings that have huge floor to ceiling windows – I love natural light more than anything.  But also there would have to be sufficient wall space for a massive bookshelf.

11. What is a fandom that you are envious of?

Hmm, I can’t think of any?

I nominate:

Chelsea / Hadeer / Steph / Ann / Fiction Fan

Charlotte / Maddie / Ally / Kristin / Sarah / Thrice Read

My questions:

  1. What’s the last movie you saw and what did you think of it?
  2. Do you have any weird or random talents?
  3. What’s your favorite song at the moment?
  4. What time of day do you do most of your blogging?
  5. What’s your favorite museum that you’ve been to?
  6. When’s the last time you went to a wedding?
  7. Do you have a celebrity doppelganger?
  8. If you were a cat, what color cat would you be?  (Very important question.)
  9. Do you have a favorite publisher or publisher imprint?
  10. Have you ever dressed up like a fictional character?  (Bonus points for photo evidence.)
  11. What’s your favorite thing about your city (or state, or country)?

  1. Oh, I love Black Sails so so much! It’s my favourite tv show! And with each season it gets better and better, which is rare in my opinion. But I understand you, I don’t watch many tv shows and I easily give up if I’m not that into them. I have more patience with books. 😂
Also, I really want to visit Belgium!

    • I am so much more patient with books! I never DNF when I read, but with tv shows I usually don’t make it through the first season. I’ve only watched, like, two episodes of Black Sails so far – Chelsea’s warned me that it gets a lot better after the first season, so I’m going to stick with it – it may take a while but I swear I’m going to finish it!

Belgium is so gorgeous! It was such a spontaneous trip, I was surprised by how much I ended up loving it.

  2. Love your answers, except obviously you made a mistake with the tortilla chips and guacamole – the correct answer is chocolate! But I forgave you when you got to the chocolate and coconut ice-cream – mmmmm!!! 😉

More seriously, I enjoyed getting to know a bit more about you, and thank you for the nomination! I’m off now to see if I can think of any weird talents… 😀

    • I have to admit, I don’t have much of a sweet tooth!!!! Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE chocolate, but it’s just not my go-to snack. I’m definitely team savory. Except for where that gelato is concerned.

You’re welcome! I’m not sure I have any weird talents either…… all of the ones I can think of (e.g., I’m good at navigating) are so deeply uninteresting. Good luck!

  3. Thanks for the tag! That 3 week vacation to Germany sounds AMAZING. All your talk of Europe makes me want to go back there so bad. Also, I also had a monstrously large beanie baby collection as a kid, and I have no idea what happened to them all, hahaha. I remember going on vacation and stuffing a bunch of them in my backpack because I needed them to come with me, lol.

    • Gahhhhh I knowwwww I haven’t been back to Europe since 2014 and it is killing me!!! I really need to go back next year, it’s just been too long at this point. But now I’ve also got that dilemma of do I want to revisit favorite places or see new places?! So many decisions.

Oh my god that was literally me. I was obsessed with my beanie babies. Seriously though where did they all go???

      Liked by 1 person

      • Oh man I know!! I think I’d choose to try some new places, then maybe once I’m wealthier I’ll revisit some old places lol. Maybe stay at somewhere nicer than a hostel 😉 That apartment you mentioned sounded awesome.

      • Omg this one hostel that I stayed in in Rome was so horrific that I ended up having to crash on the couch of someone I’d only met the day before, because I couldn’t stand the thought of sleeping in that hellhole one more time. I stayed in some pretty decent hostels too but MAN THAT WAS NOT ONE OF THEM.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Oh my gosh that sounds horrible. Was it really dirty or dangerous or both? I’ve slept in awesome hostels and okay hostels, but none that were TOO bad I suppose.

        Liked by 1 person

      • The staff was soooooo strung out the entire time, there was like no security whatsoever, they were blaring music from like midnight to 5 am, the beds were dirty and they only gave you a thin sheet to sleep with (it was October) – actually it was Halloween weekend which would account for the partying but oh my god. I wanted to die.

THE FUNNY THING IS, I had this friend in high school who was your typical straight A student, won the “teacher’s pet” senior superlative, just SUCH an all around good girl – so she messages me and says “I’m going to be in Rome next week, want to come?” and I had some free time so I said sure, and she gives me the link to the hostel that she booked. Trusting her judgment, I made a reservation without really looking into it, and it turns out it’s this hellhole. My friend’s flight gets cancelled and she doesn’t get in until the day after, and when she gets in she’s totally wasted and the first thing she does is show me her collection of wristbands from all the clubs she’s been to around Europe. And then she was telling me about how she’s been partying her way around Europe, and how she’d go to like one historical site, spend two seconds there, take the picture, and then go take a nap for the rest of the day. I was with her outside the Colosseum because I hadn’t wanted to go in that time and I asked if she wanted to meet up later and she was like “what? no, I’m just going to take the selfie, I’ll be right out.”

IT WAS A VERY WEIRD EXPERIENCE.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Omg that is wild. I don’t even know what I’d say to any of that. It’s so weird how people turn out that way sometimes?? ALSO what a waste of a trip into the Colosseum!! How??? Like did she pay money to actually go inside?? And did you actually end up spending time with her? Traveling with people who have interests that don’t align with mine can be such a difficult thing to work out.

AND THAT HOSTEL SOUNDS TERRIBLE. I’m not into the party scene at all and I don’t mind what people want to go out and do, but when they bring it back to the hostel rooms is when I would feel super uncomfortable. I stayed in a really nice hostel in Poland, but there was a kid who went out and got super drunk and I woke up to the sound of him vomiting in the middle of the night and it lasted for a while (he had a trash can or something), and luckily he was on the other side of the room but I HATED IT.

        Liked by 1 person

      • RIGHT?? I literally had no idea how to react, it was just the last thing I was expecting.

According to google the entrance fee for the Colosseum is 12 euros. 12 euros for a selfie??? Are you kidding me?? Also why wouldn’t you want to look around when you’re surrounded by all that history?? Arghhh.

So, she’d brought a friend with her from her own study abroad program, and I ended up meeting up with this girl who I’d met on tumblr like….. three days before (I don’t usually do that but she seemed cool and it was just a random ‘oh you live in Rome? I’m going to be in Rome tomorrow’ kind of deal). She was the one whose couch I ended up sleeping on. So I ended up spending more time with her than my high school friend, which was totally fine.

I LITERALLY HATE PARTYING SO MUCH I am so about that glass of wine and in bed by 11 kind of life. I cannot handle traveling with people who want to go out every night. No thank you. Omg noooooo someone vomiting in the room is like my worst nightmare. The hostel I stayed in in Brussels was pretty nice, but there was this one German guy staying in the room, he was actually super nice and we’d talked a lot the day before, but one night he got smashed and forgot his key, so he woke all of us up by like yelling and hammering on the door for a good ten minutes before someone thought to get up and let him in.

        Liked by 1 person

      • If I pay 12 euros to go into a place I am 100% staying in and getting my money’s worth! Especially the Colosseum! Like I can understand taking a selfie outside….and it’s basically telling your followers or whoever you’re sending the photo to the same thing!

Omg thank goodness for the tumblr girl. That’s so convenient. It’s funny how someone you’d only just met online was safer than an actual hostel omg. But that doesn’t surprise me anymore tbh.

I would rather do just about anything than party. My ideal trip is historical sights by day, SLEEP by night. Dancing with – or just being around – a bunch of drunk strangers is truly one of the most unappealing things and I HATE IT. When I was studying abroad I signed up to be in a tour group to Paris with a bunch of strangers because everyone I’d made friends with either had been or was from France, so I joined this group by myself and my worst fear was that I’d get roped into partying. Luckily that didn’t end up happening, but these guys in our group were going out one night and they asked me to come along and I was like…..no thanks! Because 1. partying 2. partying with a group of GUYS I don’t know. And then the next day they had this long story about how they didn’t realize the Paris metro stopped running at 12am and they were running around Paris drunk trying to find a bus and didn’t get back till dawn, and I had never been so relieved that I had said no to an invitation. Instead I stayed back with the other girls who’d also said no and we ate macaroons in our hostel room lol. MUCH NICER.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Omg that is LITERALLY ME!!!! When I went up to Montreal last year, my friend and I were staying with this guy she knew from her high school, and it was a Friday night and I’d reluctantly agreed to go out with them, but by the time they were getting ready to leave it was like…….. 10 pm already and I was like lol NOPE, I AM OUT. SORRY GUYS. So I stayed in and slept, and they got in around 5 I think? And I was so horrified thinking about how that was nearly my fate. And anyway, she’d never been to Montreal before, but she was so hungover all of the next day that she never even saw any of the city. Like……. WHY!!!!!

Partying is just THE WORST. And I don’t even like being drunk all that much? I’d much rather just have a few drinks, get tipsy, chug some water, and call it a night. At the aforementioned hellish hostel in Rome, I was sharing a room with a bunch of other Americans who like… could NOT understand when I said I didn’t want to go out with them. Like they were legitimately baffled. “But what are you…. going to DO???” Oh my god. Go away and let me sleep. Eating macaroons is superior in literally every way.

        Liked by 1 person

      • LIKE. THAT SOUNDS SO TERRIBLE. The only times I enjoy staying up till 5 am is when I can’t put down a book and I somehow don’t pass out before I finish it. Like maybe if people came BACK at 10 pm I’d be more willing to consider. And especially traveling, I want to be well rested to be able to explore in the day time!! I mean, I like seeing cities by night, but I don’t care at all the see the inside of a club.

Yeah I don’t like being drunk either, especially since I tend to get very nauseous if I drink too much….like being hungover, only my hangover doesn’t wait until morning. That said, I’ve never been properly hungover in the morning, but I’m not going to test my limits lol. But yes getting tipsy with a few friends can be fun, and its harmless, and no one even has to go to bed at 5 am. I don’t understand people who don’t understand because…THERE ARE OTHER THINGS TO DO AT NIGHT. I cherish every moment of sleep while traveling because it’s so exhausting anyway. And especially with my introvert nature I need some time at night to just chill out and recharge a bit.

        Liked by 1 person

      • RIGHT??? When I went to Paris with my friend we were actually in bed by 9:30 every night and we were just like omg we are in the CITY OF LIGHTS what is WRONG WITH US but at the same time we didn’t really care because we got up early and did stuff and it was great! Seriously though, going out for a drink and being back by 10 is THE DREAM. We definitely need to be travel buddies ahahhaah

Oh god that sounds horrible, I hate being nauseous more than anything so I wouldn’t drink either if that happened to me. I’ve actually never been hungover either! I always drink enough water before bed that it’s never been an issue. I just have nooooo interest in that party lifestyle. I’m a 25 year old grandma and I am okay with that.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Omg I feel like we’d be awesome travel buddies hahah. If there are ever any cheap flights to Europe I would happily give up blogging for a week. But omg I am such a 25 year old grandma, I’d rather go to bed early and read a book than go out late any day.

  4. Thanks for the nomination! I am so behind in tags and have about six stage reviews and one book review to write, but I will definitely get to this!

That gelato sounds amaaazing. I know so many people who aren’t fans of coconut but I love coconut (also dark chocolate – mounds and bounty chocolate bars are the best things). I look forward to you one day (hopefully?) messaging me about Black Sails! I’m realizing that so many of my favourite things come with a disclaimer of ‘takes a bit to get into’ oops!

    Liked by 1 person

    • Hahaha I know how that goes, I feel like every time I catch up on tags I have like 10 more to do.

I LOVE CHOCOLATE AND COCONUT SO MUCH. People who hate coconut make me so sad. Like, why do you hate happiness???

Ahhhh don’t worry I am DEFINITELY going to finish Black Sails. I’ve only watched the first two episodes but I will stick with it! Part of the reason it’s taking so long is that I’m watching it with Ashley and we’ve had really incompatible work schedules lately – in the last couple of weeks we’ve both had one weekend afternoon off at the same time, but last week we opted to use that time to go see Dunkirk again.

      Like

      • I KNOW RIGHT?! Coconut is amazing, how do you live without that in your life? And it works so well with chocolate. There are also a lot of people who don’t like mint chocolate, which is one of my favourite things, so again it’s like fine, more for me!

That is a totally fair decision. Dunkirk is such a brilliant movie. The last season of Black Sails comes out on blu-ray later this month, so I’m looking forward to re-watching properly instead of through streams. I hope your work schedules align soon though!

        Liked by 1 person

      • MINT CHOCOLATE IS ALSO MY FAVE. I literally will never understand how people don’t like those flavors together.

Ooh yay I’m glad you will soon get your gay pirates in HD!

  5. Oooh thanks so much for the nomination, can’t believe I just saw this post! I have some serious catching up to do overall, wow. I love your questions (number 8 is super important), I’ll definitely be doing this one 😀 And great answers as well, I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s bad at TV-series and who mainly watches reality shows (I love ANTM and the Bachelor/Bachelorette hahaha)…

    Liked by 1 person

    • Omg YES I’m so glad I’m not alone with my trashy reality television ahahaha. Have you watched Survivor? It is the best of the best of reality tv imo, I am obsessed with it.

Yay, can’t wait to read your answers! And I know what you mean, I am never not behind with tags and awards.

      Liked by 1 person

      • I LOVE trashy TV lmao, and it’s so convenient because it always happens to be on. It’s just mindless entertainment. I’m mostly in it for the drama haha. I don’t think they air Survivor here so I haven’t, but I watch the Norwegian version of it called Robinson and I do enjoy that one a lot lol.

It’s always like that. My Instagram tags in particular are totally out of control RIP x)

        Liked by 1 person

      • With shows like ANTM and the Bachelor I am 100% in it for the comedy, but then Survivor is like LEGITIMATELY DRAMATIC TELEVISION I love it so much. If you can find it online or if they ever air it you should definitely watch it. I’ve heard of the Norwegian version but I haven’t seen it!

You are already so active on IG, I don’t know how you do it!!! I lose track of things on there so easily, I’m at least a biiit more organized on WP.

        Liked by 1 person

      • Yeah, ANTM and the Bachelor are definitely mostly comedy for me. Oh, I will, I’ll look for it! I can agree though, our version is also a different kind of dramatic reality TV. We also have this really cute reality series, I think it’s called “The Great Norway Adventure” or something in the US, where Norwegian-Americans compete in “typical” Norwegian activities in order to win a meeting with their “long lost” Norwegian family. It’s just really endearing television without any hostile drama, I watch it every season lol.

Man, I’ve realized I have to take more IG breaks, like, bookstagram is fun but also draining. Especially when I feel like I HAVE to always create content for followers – and I’d rather just have fun with it. But yeah, stop paying attention and things like tags and posts just spiral out of control XD

        Liked by 1 person

      • Oh my god that Norwegian show sounds amazing! That’s why I love Great British Bake Off, everyone’s so nice and supportive of each other and there’s no drama. I don’t usually like cooking/baking shows but I make an exception for GBBO because it’s so endearing.

That totally makes sense – I feel like I do not have the drive at all to become Instagram famous, it’s like a full time job! Your Instagram is gorgeous though. Can I ask what kind of camera you use?? Your pictures are so pretty. But yeah, I bet there’s a lot of pressure that comes with that. Social media can be so stressful when you feel like you have to do things a certain way for your followers. That’s why I’m kind of lackadaisical with the way I run my blog – I don’t schedule posts or have specific weekly posts or anything, because I know if I put too much pressure on myself to do it ‘right’ I’ll get burned out really quickly.

        Liked by 1 person

      • I love GBBO for the same reason! I sometimes watch Masterchef if it’s on but it’s always not so much about the cooking than it is about the drama, it gets pretty repetitive.

Same here tbh. Sure, it’s nice that people follow me but I don’t care enough about that number to truly involve myself the way other bookstagrammers do. I’m happy with just keeping a theme, mostly because it pleases my OCD lol. And also I like to keep in touch with the people I regularly talk to, but it’s hard to stay on top of comments and to engage with everyone. Other than that it’s too much for me to have monthly giveaways or host readalongs or try to become a company rep and all that. Aww thanks so much! I actually just use my phone camera, it’s an iPhone6, and then I edit it a little in the VSCO app. That’s it! Staging photos is fun though ^_^

        Liked by 1 person

      • Drama in cooking shows is a little ridiculous, like with stuff like ANTM the drama totally fits the vibe but in cooking shows it just annoys me. I’m just here for the pastries.

Oh my god I cannot believe you just use your iPhone camera, your pictures are so clear! I guess there’s a lot to be said for good lighting ahahah. I’m downloading the VSCO app now, I’ll try playing around with that and see what happens.

Ugh seriously, even with book blogging there is just so much I’m not willing to do to make my blog more popular…. like people who email publishers for ARCs every single day and make their own graphics for every post they do and host giveaways all the time ugh nope there are just not enough hours in the day!!! But I agree, keeping in touch with the friends I’ve made on here is 100% the best part about book blogging! I do love writing reviews, but the community aspect is definitely what’s going to keep me here.

        Liked by 1 person

      • I know right! Masterchef is basically just: people become mortal enemies, Gordon Ramsey yells – oh, and there’s food.

Yeah, I don’t photograph much so there’s no way I’ll invest in an expensive camera just for bookstagram. But yes, good lighting is essential haha! I also use the same IG filter with 20-25 opacity (Ludwig, I think), just for an extra touch. The editing options in VSCO are simple but I think they work much better than the default IG ones.

Ah yes, same. I don’t do anything about ARCs, I just sit and wait for someone to approach me and sometimes I’m lucky. But I’m not about to email publishers every day lol, like this isn’t my job, I just do reviews for fun and because I want to. Making friends is definitely the best part! It’s basically the biggest reason why I keep both my IG and this blog, it’d be so boring to have popular content but not actually getting to know anyone.

        Liked by 1 person

      • I used to really love photography but I don’t do much of it these days so I can’t justify buying a nice camera 😦 One day when I am rich!!! But ooh thanks for the tips – I usually just stick to the IG filters but what annoys me about them is how they look fine on your phone but then on your computer they look like total shit. I feel like I need a nice subtle editing program on my phone. Not that I put much effort into editing my cat photos ahahaha

I’ll occasionally get physical ARCs but mostly make do with Netgalley for ARCs which is just fine for me. I have no ambitions to be one of those blogs that exclusively reviews ARCs – a lot of the books I read are things that have been hyped up by the people I follow, and I feel like I’d miss so much good stuff if I stopped buying books. Also, classics, I can’t give up reading classics.

I used to care so much more about being popular on the internet when I did fandom stuff when I was younger. Now I’m just like… I’ve made friends, I’m good!!!

        Liked by 1 person

      • Yeah, the IG filters tend to do more damage than good honestly. I used them a lot in the beginning but realized they don’t really make the pictures look the same since it depends on lighting and all that. So I found a filter I liked the most and lower the opacity just to get that extra touch ^_^

I agree, I can’t imagine just reading and reviewing ARCs, I have SO much more I’d love to read. I’d rather take recommendations from others and get the books myself than be sent books I might not like.

Oh and same, I’ve been in a few fandoms through the years but I’ve always rage quit them in the end because, well, FANDOM lol. Fandom can be terribly draining and especially when you’re active and often contribute with stuff it just gets frustrating rather than rewarding. Plus I can’t stand the drama haha.

      • I also have the worst luck with ARCs in the sense that I won’t get any for months and then all of a sudden I have like 12 at once. I’m currently drowning in my Netgalley to-read shelf. I hate the unpredictability of it, like yesterday I was approved for a book I requested so long ago that I have absolutely no memory of requesting it in the first place, but now I need to prioritize that book and it’s so annoying!!! I like to have some control over my reading schedule.

Ugh fandoms are the worst. I definitely don’t do fandom anymore – every time I get a new interest I just follow the appropriate blogs on tumblr and lurk. I made so many great online friends back in the day who I’m still in touch with, so I just never feel the need to personally involve myself in fandom stuff. There’s way too much drama. That’s why I was surprised when I started making friends through blogging – I didn’t even realize there was such a huge book blogging community on WordPress until I jumped into it!

      • Yeah, there was a period as well when I kept getting emails from authors all at once, which I never expected, and in the end I just had to say no thanks to a couple of them. Netgalley isn’t as busy for me since I tend to request outside of my area and then I just get turned down lol. It’s definitely a pressure to feel like you have to read on schedule, and especially to have a ARC review out preferably before pub date.

Same, I hate fandoms. I mean there are always things I obsess a little over and enjoy following but I never participate anymore, I also just lurk haha. And it works, I enjoy it a lot more without all the pointless drama. Back when I was on tumblr for my fandoms I often felt more miserable than I was having fun because there were SO. MANY. annoying people on there and they were always the loudest lmao. In the end I’d blacklisted so much stuff that my dash was 90% blocked posts hahaha, in the end I was like “Screw this, I’m out before I start to hate the thing I love because of fandom”. Yeah, I was surprised by book blogging as well! I didn’t really expect to get many followers or for people to even find my blog.

      • I actually wasn’t aware that you could have a Netgalley account if you live outside the US/UK/Canada/Australia – how many books do you get approved for?

With tumblr I’m at a point where I only follow people I’m friends with, so it cuts down on a lot of the nonsense. (The downside is that when my friends get into fandoms I don’t care about, half my dash is blacklisted anyway….. but at least it’s not because of the #drama.) I’m still too addicted to that website to give it up, hahaha.

      • I didn’t think so either until I decided to try making an account and realized I could haha. Honestly I don’t bother requesting the ones that explicitly say they’d rather you live in the US/UK/Canada/Australia, and not really the ones that say Europe either because for some reason I rarely get approved for those. Usually I get approved if it doesn’t say anything specific about region but there aren’t a lot of those, so naturally I’m not super active on Netgalley.

lol I used to be sooo addicted to Tumblr, even when deleting I’d make a new account. I think I’ve had like 5 different ones. In the end I rage quit the whole thing because all the fandom BS got ridiculously toxic and I haven’t felt the urge to go back after that XD
