Among all the other books I’ve been reading since August/September, I’ve also added Disappearing Earth by Julia Phillips, and I’m Afraid of Men by Vivek Shraya (which I should have finished by now but only I could manage to drag out a 2 hour audiobook to last over a week).  Both are great so far.

What was the best book you read in November?  Comment and let me know!

    • I’m really really enjoying it! It’s interesting in that each chapter is like a vignette from a different POV character so some chapters are working for me more than others but I’m really interested in what Julia Phillips is doing with it.

  1. I’m glad you enjoyed The Ruin! I often recommend McTiernan to police procedural fans. My favourite book of November was a tie between a thematically very relevant pairing – The Handmaid’s Tale and Ammonite.

    • Interestingly enough I don’t even like police procedurals! At least, they’re my least favorite style of mystery/thriller. But I can handle them in small doses and when I picked up The Ruin it was exactly what I was in the mood for. Cormac made no impression on me beyond Generic Jaded Cop Guy but I liked McTiernan’s writing and ideas quite a lot, so I’m still excited to pick up the next in the series.

I’m glad you had a successful sci-fi month!

      • Carrie plays a much more prominent role in The Scholar, which I really liked. I agree that Cormac isn’t an especially vivid character, but I still liked the fact that, unlike most fictional detectives, he manages to sustain a reasonably healthy and respectful relationship!

      • Oh, I liked Carrie! I liked McTiernan’s female characters in general. Maude was necessarily a bit thin but I thought Aisling was a great character. And I feel like Cormac’s relationship was only ever hinted at in The Ruin so hopefully it’ll be nice to see that a bit more fleshed out.

  2. Ooh, I’m so eager to read Disappearing Earth, I’m very much looking forward to your thoughts on that one! And it looks like there are still a couple of reviews I haven’t caught up to yet, so I’ll follow your links- I’m intrigued by the look of The Body Lies!
