Women’s Prize for Fiction – Longlist History

Something a bit different for today’s post…

This is a bit of a passion project inspired by Hannah, Callum, Naty, Emily, Sarah, and Marija.

In case you were not aware, I’m more than a little invested in the Women’s Prize for Fiction, an annual literary prize awarded to the ‘best’ book by a women written that year, awarded by a panel of judges.  The above group of bloggers and I were discussing which authors have been longlisted in the past, which is actually a deceptively tricky thing to find anywhere online, as the Women’s Prize Wikipedia page only lists the winners + shortlisters.  The Women’s Prize website does have detail the prize’s complete history, which is where I got all of the information from for this post; however, the layout is a bit tricky to navigate and involves a lot of clicking around; there’s really no clean, easily digestible list for this information.

That’s where this post comes in.  For posterity, I wanted to record the complete list of Women’s Prize longlisters, shortlisters, and winners, all in one post, easy enough to scroll through.

I realize this is a bit niche, but I hope it’s of interest or assistance to someone out there, even if it’s just the 7 of us who came up with this idea!

Enjoy!

  1. *sheds a single tear* So beautiful!

Really though, this is so eye-opening. I see a bunch of books I’ve read and didn’t realized were long/shortlisted, and some names that surprised me (Philippa Gregory! Interesting). I need to update the excel sheet before I get kicked out of the group.

And so many names get repeated over and over. Anything Atwood writes will end up in the list, it seems… I sense some foreboding.

Again, thank you so much for compiling this, Rachel! This is really, really interesting for all of the 7 people who care.

    • Yes I was saying to Hannah there has been so much more genre fiction longlisted back in the day than I realized! Not a ton of SFF but definitely a LOT of crime fiction, historical fiction, and literary historical romancey stuff like Gregory.

      Ugh Atwood…….. I’m scared.

Thank GOD I have the 7 other people who are interested in this in my life 😂

  2. This is incredible! 🙂 The format is so easy to read, and I love being able to see the winner covers alongside the lists. Truly a masterpiece! And having all of these titles handy will definitely help me pick up more of them in the future.

(I hadn’t realized Lucy Ellmann had been longlisted multiple times, that’s really encouraging for Ducks!)

  3. I have got my own little very long term reading project for the women’s prize winners and shortlisted books (I drew the line at linglisted ones too). I put a page on my blog for me to keep track. There is such a variety of women writers on it, I don’t know how well I will get on. Seeing all the longlisted writers too in your list is fascinating. Very useful.

  4. This is such a very good idea! I’m trying to read all the Women’s Prize winners, which are relatively straightforward, but their website is pretty dreadful and it’s so nice to have the full longlists in one place.

    • I’ve got the same goal! I think I’ve only read 9 or so, but I do foresee a blog post ranking them all in the distant future.

And ugh, yes, so hard to navigate! So much clicking! The 2015 page is a mess too, the longlist doesn’t load at all and I had to find that list on the Guardian.

      • I’ll be following for sure but I’m not aiming to read the nominees specifically. My current goal is more translations so I’ve got my eye on the International Booker longlist. I’m sure some of the Women’s Prize nominees will end up on my TBR though!

  5. This is awesome. Thank you so much for your hard work! I saved a copy and input all my reading so far into it. Some of these longlists are really daunting — they used to pick 20, and even 16 feels long nowadays. The spreadsheet tells me I’ve read 136 in total, and DNFed 17. My average rating is 3.45, which seems about right. There are a few years where I’ve almost accidentally read the whole shortlist, and a few more where I’ve read all but one so it’ll be easy to complete the set.

    • Oh yayyy this made my day, I’m always happy when this list is of interest to anyone! I’m SO IMPRESSED with your 136, I think I had around 58 at last count? It’s definitely interesting to see them all lined up next to each other! Looking back on the 20-longlist years is wild, even now 16 feels too big to me!

      • 1/4 of all books ever longlisted is impressive as hell as far as I’m concerned! And yes, agreed, I’d LOVE 12-book longlists. 16 is so many it neuters the impact slightly and it also makes me less interested in committing to the whole list, whereas 12 is much more manageable.

  6. Hi there, I absolutely love this post and your amazing spreadsheet. Thank you for sharing. I did find out that in 2012 there were 20 books longlisted though, so I think a few are missing but I’m not sure which ones.
I hope you don’t mind me saying. I found your post the most comprehensive list I have found otherwise. 😊

    • Hi Alice! I don’t mind at all and I appreciate it, the goal was to be as accurate as possible here since it’s so tricky to find this data anywhere else displayed in a coherent way. Anyway, I just checked the WP website and you’re totally right, I’m not sure how I missed those last 5… Just updated the post and the spreadsheet! Thanks again!

      • Thank you for your reply. I can’t believe how difficult this information is to find so I really appreciated your post and spreadsheet gathering all of the lists together. Very excited for next week’s Longlist announcement. 😊📚
