1000 Followers Giveaway | CLOSED

1000

1000 followers?!  This is a milestone I honestly never thought that I would hit and I can’t quite believe that we’re here, but thank you, thank you, thank you.  You guys are the best.

So, I’m going to do the done thing and host a giveaway!

GIVEAWAY: Win one of my top 10 books of 2018
(2 winners)

I wanted to not only thank you guys for your support, but emphasize just how much I appreciate this support as a literary fiction blogger in a community that’s dominated by YA and romance.  (Which isn’t to say that I dislike either of those things… as you’ll see, there’s a YA and a romance novel in the list of books below.)  And I don’t mean to break out the tiny violin here, because believe me, I appreciate the friendships I’ve made here and the pleasant interactions I have every day much, much more than an arbitrary follower number, but having been in this game for a couple of years now, I do know that it’s tricky to build up a follower base when your reading taste deviates from the community norm.

All that to say, I wanted to say thank you by sharing some of my favorite books with you guys!

Full list of books with details and links to Book Depository, where you can read longer summaries is below.  OR, if you’d like to read my thoughts on any of these in more detail, you can read my Best Books of 2018 post HERE.

  1. Milkman by Anna Burns | literary, Irish, Man Booker winner 2018, Women’s Prize longlister 2019
  2. Self-Portrait With Boy by Rachel Lyon | literary, American
  3. Conversations With Friends by Sally Rooney | literary, Irish
  4. Asking For It by Louise O’Neill | YA, Irish
  5. The Idiot by Elif Batuman | literary, Turkish-American, Women’s Prize shortlister 2018
  6. The Pisces by Melissa Broder | literary, American, Women’s Prize longlister 2019
  7. The Glorious Heresies by Lisa McInerney** | literary, Irish, Women’s Prize winner 2016
  8. The Blood Miracles by Lisa McInerney | literary, Irish, sequel to The Glorious Heresies
  9. The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker | British, Women’s Prize longlister 2019
  10. Dopesick by Beth Macy | nonfiction, American
  11. Vita Nostra by Marina & Sergey Dyachenko, translated by Julia Hersey | adult SFF, Ukrainian

**I read this in 2017, but as The Blood Miracles is its sequel, I thought I’d offer The Glorious Heresies as an option as well.  It’s not in the graphic because putting 5 on one row and 6 on the next felt like it was going to require too much math to manage on MS Paint, but it’s there in spirit.

So, that’s that; you can choose any one of those 11 books!  (If by some miracle you’ve read all of them, or the thought of reading any of these causes you physical pain, you can pick something else – this is meant to be fun.)

  1. Congratulations! Our tastes are quite similar: I’ve already read and liked Milkman, Conversations with Friends, The Glorious Heresies (wasn’t quite so keen on the sequel…), Asking For It, and The Silence of the Girls. Because of this, I’d love to win Self-Portrait with Boy.

    • That’s how I feel EVERY TIME I enter a rafflecopter giveaway and the fact that I’ve never won one doesn’t fill me with a ton of confidence. BUT I just checked and you’re entered! You can get more entries though if you click the follow me on Twitter/Goodreads etc, should you so desire. And thanks!!!

  2. I know neither of us do sincere all that often but this is SO WELL DESERVED! Here’s to the next thousand!

This is also an excellent selection of books! I’ve been meaning to get a hold of Self-Portrait With Boy since I read your review, so I would love a copy of that. Congrats again! 🙂

    • Ahhh THANK YOU. I can’t conceive of a second thousand, do book bloggers even get to 2k?! But I will rise to the challenge.

And YAY I’m glad there’s been a decent amount of interest in Self-Portrait! That book is so excellent.

    • Thanks so much Claire! I’m very happy we started chatting this year, it’s been great comparing notes on our frequently overlapping reading! I hope your 2019 reading has improved since the last time we discussed it… I’m still waiting for that elusive 5 star novel, sadly.

  3. Congrats Rachel! I appreciate your reviews so much. I know a lot of us stray from traditional reviews because they don’t get as much attention as discussion posts etc, so I’m glad your commitment to insightful reviews is paying off!

If I win, I choose The Glorious Heresies, which I’ve had in my hand at the bookstore more than once…

    • Thanks Laura! I miss you on Twitter but I’m glad you still check in on here 🙂 Also come to think of it I’m behind on your last couple of booktube vids, I’ll have to watch those later. But yes, the community-wide aversion to traditional reviews is… hard to ignore, but reviewing is what I love doing and it’s heartening to see that there’s still some kind of market for this type of blog, even if it took me YEARS to accumulate 1k. I still appreciate it!

Excellent choice!!! That book is perfection.

  4. Congrats on this milestone!! I feel you on focusing on a corner of the book blogging world that isn’t the most popular.

Your review of Dopesick is what made me buy and read it. Thanks for that, and for so many thoughtful and interesting exchanges. I’m so happy to have connected with you here!

    • Thanks so much!!! You of all people definitely get me! More than a self-involved ‘validate me with a high follower count!!!’ it’s heartening when blogs like ours that go against the grain get a bit of a following, it shows there’s still a decent amount of interest in different kinds of lit. Which, yes, on a selfish level, is much more fun than shouting book opinions into the void.

I’m so happy we’ve connected as well!!! I love that we’re such an unlikely match with our reading tastes, but still manage to find a decent amount of overlap that’s led to some brilliant discussions.

(Also, since you don’t read fiction and you’ve already read the one nonfiction option, you’re welcome to enter the giveaway and choose a different book, should you so desire! This is more about celebrating my friends and the community than making people read a book they have no interest in.)

  5. Wonderful post, and there are a few i havent read.I know we have similar tastes, especially when it comes to Irish fiction. If I win, I’d like either the Pat Barker Silence of The Girls or the Lisa McInerney 🙂

    • I feel a bit ridiculous replying to these comments being like ‘I love that one!!’ when it’s literally a list of 10 of my favorite books, but whatever, I love ALL OF THOSE. Good luck! 🙂

    • OH HI! Not cheating at ALL, this is more about celebrating the friendships I’ve made in this community than anything. And I’m happy that there’s so much interest in Self-Portrait! Good luck!!

  6. Congrats on 1000!!! I’m not surprised at all, your reviews are always excellent. 🙂
…As is this selection of books! I definitely see some favorites here. But if I were to win, I would really like Vita Nostra, it looks so intriguing and I haven’t checked it out yet!

  7. I have been terrible in keeping up with blogging, so I missed this post but – congratulations! Could not think of someone who deserves it more! I love your blog and reviews so much. 💗 And basically all of these books are already on my TBR but I am kinda partial to Vita Nostra.
